So what's the deal with Echo Beach Studios?

The Echo Beach Story

Echo Beach Studios grew out of a project studio known as Crummy Beach Studios which catered to the songwriting demo crowd in Palm Beach County, Florida during the mid 1980s. Owner Chas Payson had cobbled together some gear in the porta-studio mode which soon began to sprout additional tracks and noisemakers. After a few short term stays in vacant buildings the studio settled in a condo just off the beach. Crummy Beach's reputation was that of a comfortable wood floored, lofted ceiling, hammock hanging, seabreeze project room with a lot of gear and good results. What more could one ask for? Unfortunately South Florida condo dwellers are not known for warmly accepting long haired musicians making music at odd hours a few feet and a floor above their heads. It was time for a change. It was time to go legit. The year was 1989 and a plan to be known as Echo Beach Studios was born. Along with a more respectable name came more respectable gear and a respectable studio designer.

Chas teamed up with studio consultant Bob Spangler and Studio Designer John Storyk and together they created what we know today as Echo Beach Studios in all it's glory! Upon entering the first floor of the building visitors find themselves facing the lobby to their left and conference room, video production and other offices down a hallway to their right. One can then take either the elevator or stairs to the second floor lobby where they can relax before their session.

Studio A is the main studio with a 27' wide x 18' deep control room located centrally between a large iso booth and the main tracking room. The tracking room is served by a private lounge with kitchen & bath. A small balcony looks out over Sawfish Bay to the rear of the building. The studio is on the second floor and access is either from the stairs or elevator in the main lobby or an external stairway that takes one from the parking lot to the studio load in. The acoustics of the iso booth are quite dry with just a hint of room contributed by the RPG "flutter free" diffusers mounted on the ceiling. The main tracking room contains a Yamaha grand piano, an assortment of guitar amps and a drum riser surrounded by moveable gobos. The wood floor and wooden acoustic clouds give this midsized room a neutral short reverb very conducive to most recordings. If greater reverb time is required the lounge can also double as a reverb chamber and the acoustic characteristics of this room are quite spectacular. (just remember to unplug the fridge)....more to come
